The winner of the best-tasting protein powder? It’s from a Swiss company you may have never heard of.

Why is that protein powder is typically an acquired taste? Sure, you want to use protein powder because it’s an easy way to add extra nutrients to your body and keeps you fuller longer. But, why can’t they just taste good?

Especially if you are trying to avoid whey and soy and would like to use a vegan protein powder. The options are slim for a protein that actually tastes good.

Now, why would you want to avoid using whey- or soy-based protein powders?

You may not realize this, but whey is a common allergen. Do you ever feel icky in your tummy after using whey protein powder?

According to Medical News Today:

Some people who are allergic to milk may be specifically allergic to whey. In moderate doses, whey protein does not typically cause any adverse events. However, consuming very high doses can cause:

  • stomach pains
  • cramps
  • reduced appetite
  • nausea
  • headache
  • fatigue

What about Soy? Guess what…Soy is also a common allergen.

According to Harvard Health:

Some soy products contain estrogen-like chemicals that could have adverse effects. So stay away from soy isoflavone supplements and foods made with textured vegetable protein and soy protein isolate, found in many protein powders and nutrition bars.

The safest option is a plant-based or vegan protein powder, as is the winner for best-tasting protein powder.

Best-Tasting Protein Powder: Testimonials

“A Plant-Based Protein Shake that Actually Tastes Good

It took me a long time to transition from vegetarian to vegan, and a big part of the difficulty was the awful taste and texture of most vegan protein powders. I have tried at least a dozen brands, from the edible (with enough fruit and nut milk) Naturliga and MRM, to the halfway decent Genisoy and Six Star, and the truly awful Vega, Plant Fusion, Raw Fit, and Sunwarrior brands. I can’t stand the gritty texture and gross stevia aftertaste that seems ubiquitous with plant-based protein powder.

I had resigned myself to the fact that the best I could expect with vegan protein was something that wasn’t especially unpleasant when doctored up with enough added fruit and flavorings. I tried this brand on my mother’s recommendation (she is not vegan, so I figured if she thought it was good, it must be better than most), despite the steep price tag. I was nervous about spending so much on what would probably just be another costly mistake, but I decided to try it once, just in case.

I am so glad I did! This actually tastes good! I had given up hope of actually enjoying a plant-based protein shake, but I really like the taste of this, and there is no awful texture. I do tend to mix it with frozen strawberries and a bit of PB2 (so delicious), but I have had it plain and it is good on its own, too.

Why is this the best-tasting protein powder?

One serving of the best-tasting protein powder from Arbonne in the US has 9 grams of Sugar Cane, which is low for a meal, especially compared to the Standard American diet. The average American consumes 120 grams of sugar (30 teaspoons) per day.

For instance, a banana has 14 grams of natural sugar and a 6 oz strawberry Yoplait Yogurt has 27 grams of processed sugar! That yogurt is hardly a meal, whereas the 20 grams of Vegan Protein shake is a meal.

best-tasting protein powderThe fact that the Sugar Cane in the shakes is mixed with protein lowers the glycemic index and helps the sugar to be absorbed more slowly, preventing a spike in blood sugar. Therefore, the packaging says the shakes have a “low glycemic index, which has little effect on blood sugar levels.” Remember, the goal is to keep our blood sugar stable.

SUGAR CANE IS MUCH HEALTHIER THAN PROCESSED SUGAR. It has minerals and is used by the body as fuel. It isn’t stripped of nutrients by using chemicals, it isn’t as acidic and has a lower glycemic index than processed sugar.

Other benefits of the best-tasting protein powder

Arbonne Essentials Protein Powder is clinically tested and certified to have a low glycemic index, which has little effect on blood sugar levels and does not cause a spike in blood sugar.

You can find shakes, even at the health food store, with cheap-quality protein and only a couple of grams of sugar. They have artificial sweeteners (or they taste horrible). Arbonne also uses Stevia to get the great taste in our shakes. Stevia is plant-derived and is a natural sweetener that is ten times sweeter than sugar.

Don’t forget, along with the high quality, vegan protein blend, Arbonne’s shakes also have 20 vitamins and minerals, CoQ 10, Alfalfa, Ginseng, and Kelp root powder, as well as flax seed.
