What do Shawn Achor and Elevacity have in common? Happiness of course!
Elevacity’s mission is to elevate your health and well-being, so it is fitting that our spokesperson is the expert on happiness.
Shawn’s View on Happiness—It’s All About Connecting
According to Shawn, “Happiness isn’t an individual sport. Happiness isn’t self-help. Happiness is something we do as an interconnected community in the midst of all the hyper competition in this world. With all the hyper comparison we see as soon as we go on social media as we see people trying to win best life award on Facebook or on Twitter. In the midst of that, if we weren’t feeling like we had to compete and compare, but instead we’re connecting more deeply with others and creating real reciprocal bonds, finding a way of bringing happiness and success out to more people, it turns out those formidable mountains in front of us, drop.
Success becomes easier.
That’s part of the reason we saw the happiness advantage effect in the first place – happiness is one of the greatest predictors of our long-term levels of success.”
The Road to Happiness
Even the happiness expert, Shawn Achor admits that he has not always been the happiest person. He shares with us his journey that took him through battles with depression:
“I went through two years of depression while I was at Harvard teaching the Harvard freshmen how not to become depressed themselves. What I found was that up to that point, I was pretty good at checking off individual metrics in my life.
When I got depressed, I thought, ‘I can solve this myself. I can read some books. I’m going to put this into practice. I don’t need anyone else. In fact, I’m not even going to tell people I’m depressed. I’m going to put up a perfect facade, and I’ll be there for other people, but I’m not going to let them in. I don’t want to burden them. I went deeper and deeper into depression.”
Shawn realized that he needed help in order to get out of the depression that he was in, this is when he changed his point of view on happiness. That you can’t do it alone.
“The turning point for me was when I shifted from a small potential idea, which is that happiness is just self help to a big potential idea. The idea that happiness must be an interconnected pursuit. I turned to my eight closest friends and family and told them, “I’ve been going through depression for two or three years. I have no idea how to get out of this. I don’t know if I can, and I really need your help.”
Shawn wants to see a world where negativity, stress, and uncertainty don’t outweigh the positivity and happiness. He wants his conferences, books, and tools to spread far beyond the people in the seats, to the people at home reading, so that they too can find happiness and success through positive psychology.
“We can tip this world away from negativity, stress, and uncertainty to a world that believes that this behavior matters, can see the meaning evolved with our relationships, and we can find a way of making this a better world for all the people, not just that are at the conference, but all the people that will never get to go to the conference. To me, that is what makes me so happy knowing that this research isn’t just about me, it’s about all of you and all of us.”
I couldn’t agree more.
