Here are 6 skincare basics every woman, no matter your age should be using daily.
Imagine. You noticed your skin is getting drier than it used to and you’ve developed some fine lines under your eyes. So, you go to the store to load up on products and stare at the options and have no clue where to start.
Is this you? This was me! Sure, I know we need to moisturize. Somewhere along the way, someone said you have to use a serum. OK, but what else? My skin was oily AND dry, and getting very, very wrinkly. I use A LOT of expressions when I talk, so I know that’s to blame.
And I love to laugh, so I have a lot of laugh lines. But sagging skin on my neck….geez, no wonder I always felt like a before picture. I had no clue about the skincare basics I needed, must less the specialized treatments I needed for my skin issues.
And yes, I went to the mall and to the big box stores to have a teenager with perfect skin tell me all about makeup. I’ve had facials with estheticians telling me all the procedures that I could have and really pushed botox. Needles touching my face ain’t gonna happen.
Skincare should be easy!
Trust me, we’ve got this.
It just takes a little bit of education and finding what works for you.
Here’s what I’ve learned. The skin ages in two ways – biologically (Thanks, Mom) and environmentally (Thanks, Sun).
When you find a program that works for you – stick with it. Use it all. All the lotions, sprays, and serums are meant to work together. I know there are so many skincare items on the market that it’s overwhelming. Honestly, I would usually pick out whatever was cheapest or on sale – turns out that is NOT the best method for aging gracefully! Find a comprehensive skincare collection that will help you biological and environmental aging skin issues.
What are your skincare goals?
My skincare goal is to age gracefully. Botox isn’t for me. I’m ok if people know I’m in my 40s. But, I still want people to think, ‘Wow, her skin looks great! Wonder if she’s 40 yet?’
According to the American Academy of Dermatology:
- Production of collagen and elastin slows down a dramatic 65% between ages 20 and 80.
- The thickness of the skin decreases 6% every 10 years.
- The sun causes 90%–95% of the wrinkles, lines, as well as brown, red and white discoloration on our bodies.
90% of premature facial aging can be attributed to sun damage. This is why you’ll see me wearing a hat if I am outside!
Here are the skincare basics every woman needs:
Facial Cleanser: Cleansing is the first step to healthy-looking skin – and you need to cleanse twice a day. Find a gentle cleanser to remove dead skin cells, makeup, oil, and debris. When your skin is clean, it allows skincare products to work better.
Toner: After cleansing, a toner will help prepare your skin by minimizing the appearance of pore size. If you are acne-prone, a toner will typically help remove oils as well.
Serum: Serums deliver targeted ingredients like antioxidants and peptides that help with anti-aging, or help refresh skin’s appearance.
Eye Cream: These can reduce the appearance of puffiness, smooth the look of fine lines, brighten the appearance of dark circles, and replenish moisture. The skin around the eyes is delicate and thin plus it loses moisture rapidly, so it needs to be gently cared for.
Day Cream with Sunscreen: Be sure the moisturizer matches your skin’s needs – whether it’s oily, normal, or a combination. SPF is non-negotiable!
Night Cream: (Reminds me of my Grandma, who had great skin…hmmm) This is important because night creams work during your nightly reparative process and provide moisture barrier protection while you sleep.
Skincare Basics – Start Today
Your skin can start to show signs of aging as early as 25. It’s important to start today using these skincare basics even if, like me, 25 was many many moons ago. It’s not too late to get started.
I truly think you should buy the best skin care that you can afford. One important tip is that when you find a skincare line that fits your skin (and your budget) that you should use the entire line. These premium skincare basics were made to work together. So, you could be missing out on some critical benefits if you only use one or two products from the line you choose.
